Arundhati Roy, an Indian writer, wrote The God of Small Things as her debut novel. The book explores the struggles faced by members of Indian families and forbidden love, while also shedding light on the political mayhem engulfing the state of Kerala, India. The God of Small Things won the Booker Prize in 1997 for Roy's intricate depiction of the everlasting change experienced by different members of the fictional "Ipe" family circumvolving a death that occurred in the 1960's.
